Why this made the list
A thermostat can only heat or cool based on the temperature at its own location, which is often a hallway or entryway that runs colder or hotter than the rooms people actually spend time in. This sensor fixes that specific problem for a relatively low cost, without needing to replace or upgrade the thermostat itself.
What it actually does
It's a small battery-powered sensor that reads the temperature (and, on compatible setups, humidity) in whatever room you place it and sends that reading to a compatible Nest thermostat over Bluetooth, no separate hub required. You can schedule the thermostat to prioritize a specific sensor's reading at certain times of day, so it heats or cools based on the bedroom at night and the living room during the day, for example. It runs on a single CR2 lithium battery rated for up to about two years, and a single thermostat can pair with up to six sensors.
Who this is actually for
Anyone with a compatible Nest thermostat whose home has a room that consistently runs hotter or colder than wherever the thermostat is mounted, a bedroom, a converted space, an addition. It's a targeted fix, not a general smart home upgrade.
What to weigh before buying
- This is the single biggest catch: it only works with the Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd and 4th gen) and the discontinued Nest Thermostat E. It does not work with the cheaper 2020 Nest Thermostat, so check your thermostat model before buying.
- It relies on Bluetooth range from the thermostat, roughly 50 feet, so a sensor in a far corner of a larger home may not connect reliably.
- It only reports temperature (and humidity where supported) to the thermostat's scheduling logic. It's not a standalone smart home sensor with its own app alerts or automations.
The verdict
A cheap, effective fix for uneven heating and cooling, but only if your thermostat is on the supported list. Confirm compatibility before adding it to the cart.
